How to choose your wedding dress silhouette
A-line, mermaid, ball gown or sheath? A short guide to what each silhouette does best and how to arrive prepared for your fitting.
The silhouette is the first big decision, before fabric, neckline or details. It determines how the dress falls on your body and how easily you move in it for a whole day.
The four basic silhouettes
- A-line: fitted at the waist and gently flared to the hem. It flatters almost every body type and is the most comfortable for dancing.
- Mermaid: follows the body to the knee, then flares out. It highlights the waist and hips; it needs a careful fitting for freedom of movement.
- Ball gown: fitted corset and full skirt. The most fairy-tale option, suited to formal ceremonies and large venues.
- Sheath: falls along the body without volume. Minimalist, modern, perfect for civil or city weddings.
How to decide
Bring a short list of images you love to the fitting, but leave room for surprises: many brides leave with a silhouette they had not considered. Try at least two different silhouettes at your first fitting.
Think about the venue too: a long train on grass or sand needs different solutions than in a ballroom.
